What nose and allergy problems do ENT doctors treat in children?

February 9, 2023

Are you concerned about your child’s nose, sinuses, or allergies? Does your child constantly have sneezing and drainage from the nose? Have they been complaining of a stuffy nose that won’t go away? If these symptoms sound familiar, then this blog post is for you! We’re going to discuss the different nose and allergy problems ENT doctors treat in children and what to do if you suspect your child has one of these issues.

Sinusitis

An ENT doctor can diagnose a pediatric sinus infection by performing a thorough history and examination. If your child is suffering from recurrent or severe sinusitis, your primary care doctor may refer you to an ENT specialist for further evaluation and treatment. ENT doctors can provide advanced care for chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps, or a sense of smell. At ENT Care Centers, our specialists provide comprehensive adult and pediatric care for all types of ear, nose, and throat-related issues.

Chronic Cough in Children

Chronic cough in children is a condition that can be caused by a variety of different ear, nose, and throat problems. ENT doctors are specially trained to diagnose and treat a wide variety of conditions that could cause chronic coughs in children, including ear infections, hearing loss, snoring and sleep apnea, noisy breathing, chronic throat infections, and neck masses. If your child is experiencing a persistent, chronic cough, an ENT doctor can help to determine the underlying cause and provide the best care for your child's condition.

Pediatric Nasal Allergy & Congestion

Common ENT problems that ENT doctors treat in children include ear infections, throat infections, hearing loss, allergies, sinus congestion, and thyroid diseases. Ear infections can cause pain and discomfort, while throat infections can lead to difficulty swallowing or speaking. Hearing loss can be caused by an infection or injury, and may require further testing to determine the cause and severity. Allergies can cause congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes and ears, and a runny nose. ENT doctors may recommend medications or allergy shots to manage symptoms. Sinus congestion can cause pain and pressure in the face, as well as a persistent cough. ENT doctors may recommend decongestant medications or surgery to reduce sinus blockage. Thyroid diseases can lead to fatigue, weight gain or loss, and other symptoms. ENT doctors may recommend medications or surgery to address the underlying thyroid condition.

Nosebleeds

When a child has a nosebleed, the initial evaluation should focus on the respiratory and hemodynamic status of the child. In most cases, physical examination by a doctor or ENT surgeon will reveal blood vessels close to the surface of the nose that are bleeding. The clinician will assess for blood vessels in the nose. Treatment typically involves direct compression of the nasal alae for 5 to 10 minutes and treating any underlying condition that may be causing the bleed. If necessary, two large-bore intravenous lines may be needed to administer fluids, medications, or blood products if there is a significant amount of bleeding. It is important to stay calm and reassure the child during a nosebleed as this can help reduce further bleeding. For those over the age of 50, it is possible that deeper blood vessels in the face and nose are the source of bleeding, which can be difficult

Nasal Fractures

Nasal Fractures are a common injury that can occur as a result of trauma to the face and nose. These fractures can involve the bones and cartilage of the nose and can be quite uncomfortable for children. Fortunately, ENT doctors are well-equipped to treat these injuries and help your child achieve full recovery.

When a child suffers from a nasal fracture, an ENT doctor will first assess the extent of the injury and any associated symptoms. Treatment options for nasal fractures may include medications to reduce pain and inflammation, immobilization with splints, or surgery to repair the affected areas. In some cases, ENT doctors may also recommend reconstructive surgery to help restore the nose’s shape and function.

Additionally, ENT doctors can provide treatment for other ear, nose, and throat problems that children may experience, including allergies, hearing loss, sinus infections, tonsillitis, sleep apnea, and more. If you have any concerns about your child’s ear, nose, or throat health, it is important to consult an ENT doctor as soon as possible. With prompt diagnosis and treatment, your child can get back to feeling like themselves again.

Conclusion

ENT doctors treat a wide variety of ear, nose, and throat problems in children. Common problems include ear infections, throat infections, hearing loss, sinus issues, and tinnitus. ENT doctors are also skilled in diagnosing and treating conditions related to the voice and speech, breathing, and sleep. It is important for primary care physicians and caregivers to be aware of these issues and to seek the help of an ENT doctor if any of these issues arise.
